Gabion mesh installation is a practical method for building retaining walls, slope protection, riverbank reinforcement, and landscape features. Proper installation ensures long‑term stability, drainage, and resistance to deformation under load. The process begins with careful site preparation. The construction area should be cleared of vegetation, loose soil, and debris. A level foundation is then created, often with a compacted gravel or crushed stone base to improve drainage and provide support. For retaining structures, a shallow trench is excavated to seat the first layer of gabion boxes securely.Before placing the mesh units, it is important to check dimensions and alignment according to the design drawings. Gabion boxes are usually supplied flat‑packed and must be unfolded and shaped on site. The panels are lifted into position and connected at the edges using lacing wire, spiral binders, or fasteners. All vertical and horizontal joints are secured, with particular attention to corners and intersections to ensure a rigid, box‑like form. Internal diaphragms, spaced at regular intervals, are installed to divide the gabion into smaller cells, which helps prevent bulging and maintains the shape when filled.Once assembled and placed on the prepared base, the gabion units are aligned using string lines or laser levels. The first course is critical, as it supports all subsequent layers. After confirming level and line, stone infill is placed. Durable, angular rock of specified size is selected so it cannot pass through the mesh openings. Filling is done in layers, typically by machine with hand placement along the visible faces to achieve a tight, uniform appearance. Care is taken to avoid dropping stones from excessive height, which can damage the mesh coating.During filling, bracing wires or stiffeners are installed across the gabion width to maintain the design dimension and prevent outward deformation. These braces are usually fixed at mid‑height and spaced evenly along the length. Each cell is filled to the top and then closed with the lid panel, which is laced securely to the side walls and diaphragms. Proper closure eliminates gaps and ensures that the rock mass and mesh behave as a single, stable unit.Additional layers are stacked in a staggered pattern, with joints offset to enhance stability. As the structure grows in height, backfilling with free‑draining material is carried out behind the wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure. Geotextile fabric is often placed between the soil and the gabion structure to prevent fine particles from washing through the rock. Regular inspection during installation verifies that alignment, compaction, and connections meet the design requirements, resulting in a durable and effective gabion mesh system.
